Google AI Overviews optimization: earn the citation, not the leftover click
Google AI Overviews optimization earns the citation without surrendering the click. Method, measurement and the rankings that still produce enquiries.
Google AI Overviews optimization is the work of making a page worth quoting, then keeping the commercial decision on the page itself. The overview is a compressed answer with a handful of source links. Some of those links are sites that already rank. Some are the page that stated a fact cleanly enough to lift. Treating the feature as a traffic channel you can simply win is how teams publish thin explainers and watch both the overview and the blue links ignore them.
What the citation is actually selecting
An overview is not ten blue links with the labels filed off. It is a short synthesis. The system expands a query into smaller questions, pulls passages that appear to answer them, and attaches citations where it wants a source. A page can rank third and still be quoted. The page in position one can be skipped if it buries the answer under a banner, a form and three paragraphs of throat-clearing.
The passage that gets lifted is usually a plain statement: a definition, a constraint, a comparison, a sequence, or a figure you will stand behind. It sits in HTML, near the question it answers, and does not depend on a tab or an accordion that fails to render. Classic rankings still set the boundary. A page that is not indexed will not be cited, and a URL with no impressions is a weak candidate beside one that already earns them for the same queries. Technical eligibility comes first: crawl, canonical, indexation, and a template that exposes the text. If those are broken, citation work is decoration.
Where Google AI Overviews optimisation is decided
People reach for answer engine optimization as if ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google were one product. They are not. An overview on Google is tied to the index and to ranking systems. Other answer engines retrieve on their own schedules, and an ungrounded reply may cite nobody. The overlap is real: clear entities, sourced claims, pages that answer a specific question. The mistake is a second site "for AI" while the ranking site stays untouched.
Do the work on the URLs you already want to rank. A service page that states who the offer is for, what it excludes, how the engagement runs and what the buyer should prepare is more citable than a post that restates the category. A supporting guide can own the fan-out questions and should link to the commercial URL. That is on-page SEO for service pages, not a separate jargon budget.
Keep a panel of thirty to sixty searches: terms that already trigger an overview, and commercial head terms where you would rather own the blue link than the footnote. Log whether an overview appears, which URLs are cited, which sub-questions the summary answers, and whether your page covers each one in a liftable paragraph. Update the sheet by hand. No export honestly means you were the citation every time.
Passages, proof and the click you still want
Give the factual answer away. Hold the fit. A paragraph can explain how a retainer is sequenced, what a technical fix can and cannot move, and which queries are a poor use of budget. The visit is still required for the judgement: whether this firm, this scope and this constraint match. If the overview can complete the purchase, you wrote a brochure. If the page withholds the basic explanation, you will not be quoted, and you will lose the reader who does click.
Original method beats a recycled definition. Describe the sequence you run, name the inputs, and say what you will not do. Interchangeable guides do not deserve the citation. Where you have a point of view, write it in one or two sentences that survive being lifted. Where you are unsure, say so. A false precision becomes a liability the moment a buyer checks it, and the citation then works against the enquiry.
Schema only helps when it matches the page. Stuffed FAQ markup, hidden text and doorway URLs written for a prompt are liabilities. A citation will not make a manipulative page respectable.
AI Overviews citations, measured without theatre
Measure three things on the same URLs every month, and refuse a fourth vanity score. The citation log comes first: cited or not, which competitor was, and which of their passages was cleaner. Search Console comes second: impressions, clicks and average position for those queries and pages. A citation alongside fewer clicks is not a win until you know whether the query was informational, whether you lost position, or whether the overview absorbed a question you used to own. Enquiries come third. Ask how the buyer arrived. A form field beats attributing a branded visit to an overview that analytics cannot see.
Do not invent a citation-rate target. Inclusion moves when the feature changes, when a rival publishes a tighter page, and when you rewrite your own. The monthly note should say what changed in the panel, what you shipped, and what you refused. A vendor's visibility chart can sit in an appendix. It is not the decision.
The pages in the panel should be the pages in the classic SEO plan: the service URLs, the comparison, the guide that supports them. If the work drifts into an unlinked blog, the revenue URLs stay untouched. A market-language mismatch is a different fault. An American explainer is a poor source for a British commercial query, which is an international SEO problem, not a prompt trick.
Sequence, and the things we will not ship
Confirm the page can be crawled and indexed, and that the canonical is the URL you are willing to be quoted on. Read the current overviews before anyone drafts. Rewrite the priority URLs so each sub-question has a direct answer, a constraint, and a reason to continue. Add internal links with anchors a person would write. Then corroborate the entity: consistent naming, an about page that states facts, and a named author where the page claims experience. Mentions come after the page deserves them. Editorial link building pointed at a thin URL only gives that URL more company.
We will not ship a mill of machine-written explainers, a dated promise of citation, or a plan that strips commercial intent so a summary can harvest it. A lift in brand search is not proof. If we cannot show the query, the overview and the URL, we do not claim the cause.
If a model cannot tell which company is speaking, it will quote a directory, a larger publisher, or a rival whose about page is specific. That is entity SEO for ChatGPT and Perplexity, solved with consistent facts rather than more adjectives in the hero. Done properly, AI SEO is this stack: an eligible URL, a liftable passage, a resolvable brand, corroboration, then a look at whether classic rankings moved with it.
The ranking page is still the asset
An overview citation is a distribution surface for a page you would want even if the feature vanished next quarter. The page has to rank, convert, and be a document the sales team will send. Optimising only for the extract is how sites become sources for answers and strangers for revenue. Hiding the answer behind a gate or a vague introduction keeps you off the citation, and then costs you the query once a clearer page exists.
Hold both. Ship the liftable paragraph. Keep the proof, the exclusions and the offer on the URL. Review the panel beside the ranking report, not instead of it. When the same URL gains impressions and starts appearing as a source, you have a result you can explain. When it does neither, the fix is the page, the internal links, or the absence of corroboration.
SEO Jackers Global runs this as desk work on pages that already have a job. If that is the shape of the problem, scope it as AI SEO and put the brief on the order form.
